You’ve heard it 1000 times! If you’re old enough, maybe even Bobby McFerrin’s song pops into your head. “Be Happy” has to be the lamest title I could think of for this blog post. I Googled it. 279 million hits about being happy!
Yet, we suck at being happy in the United States. According to the United Nations’ World Happiness Report, Norway is the happiest country of 2017. Meanwhile, the US has continued its slide into 14th place citing among other things, “a drop in social support, a sense of reduced personal freedom,… and a perceived increase in corruption.”
Don’t worry. I don’t plan to drop a serious knowledge bomb on you today or do a deep dive on why we seem to be such an unhappy lot. But I am going to give you a few things that you should be doing right now to BE happy.
1. Smile. Yep, hold it. Hold it. Say “Cheeeeeese.” Smiling is truly happiness-inducing behavior that you need to deliberately incorporate into your daily routine. Set a reminder if you must. Whatever you do, try to evoke a genuine smile by reflecting on a good memory and hold your grin for 30 seconds. That’s it!
2. BE happy. No hocus-pocus here. Literally, ACT like a happy person. What does a happy person look and sound like? Try picking up the pace when you walk. Speak quicker and with a higher pitch and keep a smile in your voice. It’s not as creepy and weird as you think.
Try these two strategies and let me know how it works out for you.
Love your team!
